Abstract

This investigation was made to clarify the influence of strong wind (12m/sec. for 5 hours) at about the heading stage upon the elongation of internodes, the emergence of heads and the development of kernels of paddy rice plant.1) The elongation of internodes was reduced by the strong wind and such reduction was recognized more remarkably on the upper internodes.2) The harmful effect of the strong wind upon the process of elongation was varying on each internode and it corresponded to the most rapid elongation period of each internode. But actually, the shortest culm in length was found in treatments 1 to 3 days after the beginning of heading.3) The harmful effect of strong wind upon the emergence of ear corresponded to the elongation of the upper first internode and had no correlation with the leaf sheath.4) The strong wind resultedboth in both late ear emergence and sheathed ears which in their turn affected the normal blooming and fertilization of flowers, causing the formation of many abortive kernels and reduced yield.
