Abstract
Secretory component occurs in external secretions in two forms, bound and free. The former is an integral part of the secretory IgA molecule, the attachment being covalent in the human. Free secretory component, on the other hand, is present in secretions unattached to other protein. The bound and free forms of secretory component, in both human (1,2) and rabbit (3) have been previously compared in terms of size, amino acid composition, and antigenic determinants and found to be similar, and possibly identical. In order to extend the comparison of the bound vs. free secretory component we have done peptide mapping studies and determined their N-terminal amino acid sequences.
