Abstract

The taxonomic position of 23 new isolates resembling Prosthecomicrobium in morphology and originating from various aquatic habitats was evaluated by nucleic acid analysis. DNA/DNA-hybridization and 16S rRNA cataloguing indicated the heterogeneity of these prosthecate bacteria. Three DNA homology groups emerged, showing DNA relatedness neither among each other nor to Prosthecomicrobium pneumaticum, P. enhydrum , and P. hirschii , which themselves are unrelated (< 5% DNA homology). These results are supported by studies based on 16S rRNA cataloguing. P. pneumaticum, P. enhydrum , and representatives of DNA homology groups 1 and 2 are members of the alpha subclass of Proteobacteria but occupy different phylogenetic positions. Ancalomicrobium adetum also belongs into the alpha subclass, but represents an individual line of descent.
