Abstract

To make sure whether there is the seasonal fluctuation of basal metabolism in the aged as much as in the younger, this second examination was carried out on the same old persons in summer 1955 whose basal metabolism had been previously measured in winter. Results obtained were as follows: (1) The basal metabolism of the aged(over 60to 80years) in winter was higher by 10% than in summer. This width of seasonal fluctuation of the aged coincides almost with of the younger adults (aged 20 to 30). (2) The basal metabolism of the aged was only 10-15% less than that of the younger adults, though the figure corresponding to this in FAO amounted to 20%. (3) Lower levels of both specific gravity of whole blood and creatinin excretion in urine, and higher level of serum cholesterol compared with younger adults, are all considered as physiological symptoms of aging.
