Abstract

Alkali lignin of Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell. has been treated with ethanol in the presence of hydrogen chloride to yield ethanol alkali lignin. The reaction has been found to involve ethylation of an acidic hydroxyl group, not acetalization of a carbonyl group. From the analysis of derivatives of ethanol alkali lignin, ethanol lignin, and alkali lignin, some inferences have been drawn regarding the structure of protolignin.
