Abstract

ABSTRACT Attempts have been made to transform the cell Paramecium aurelia with DNA preparations. No success was achieved for the genes concerned with maintenance of killer particles or surface antigens. Using radioautography, density gradient ultracentrifugation and nucleic acid hybridization it was shown that extracellular DNA was taken up by paramecia and remained as long nucleotide sequences. Possible reasons for the failure of transformation in the face of such observations are given.
