Abstract

AbstractThe evaluation of Aloe arborescens MILL. var. natalensis Berger (Kidachi aloe) and Aloe extract (Jap. Pharm. IX (JP IX)) was studied as to the anthraquinone content. The total anthraquinone content in Kidachi aloe varied according to the stages of blooming. The content showed highest value (2.17%) at the stage “before blooming” and lowest value (1.10%) at “full blooming”. The anthraquinone content in the middle lower part of leaves showed the highest value, next, the lowest and middle upper parts, and the content in upper-most part showed the lowest value. Anthraquinones were not observed in lower part of stem, roots, buds, flowers or flower shoot but only a trace amount in the upper part of stem. Aloe extract (JP IX) was also studied using Sephadex-LH 20 column chromatography. Six zones were observed on the chromatogram of which 4 contained such anthraquinones as barbaloin and aloe-emodin.
