Abstract

Pituitary responsiveness to LRH was studied in women with physiologic amenorrhea in the puerperium and during pregnancy. LRH (25 μg) was given intravenously as a test dose. No significant FSH response was found 8 to 10 days after delivery. The same women were re-examined two and four weeks post partum and then a successive increase in the response of FSH and of LH was recorded. The increase did not reach the level of corresponding values in LH found in eumenorrheic controls in the late follicular phase. However, in contrast with what was seen in the eumenorrheic women, the FSH response was stronger than the LH response, and the similarity to the response in prepubertal girls is discussed. No significant increase in FSH was found during pregnancy.
