Abstract
The nature and diversity of acid mucopolysaccharides of connective tissue have been discussed. It is probable that these substances play a variety of physiologic roles. Insulin affects the rate of synthesis of acid mucopolysaccharides in skin. There is a striking decrease in concentration in the skin of diabetic animals. This is restored toward normal by the administration of insulin. Acid mucopolysaccharides are excreted in the urine of patients with Hurler syndrome. At least two different polysaccharides are involved. The amount of each in the tissues and urine vary in different patients.
