Abstract

AbstractFifteen samples of bee honey from different localities in Sudan were tested for their in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity. All honey samples tested exerted powerful inhibitory effects on gram-positive and gram-negative strains of both standard test organisms and clinical isolates from infected wounds. Daily application of bee honey to septic wounds, chronic ulcers and pyogenic abscesses gave favourable results including cleanliness of wounds, growth of healthy granulation tissue and prompt graft taking. Advantages of the use of bee honey over conventional antibiotics are outlined.
