Abstract

Water-soluble extracts from strawberry foliage attracted or repelled the two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, and the strawberry spider mite, T. turkestani Ugarov & Nikolski. Preference or nonpreference reactions from “standardized” female mites were assayed in a choice tube. Gustatory response and feeding behavior of T. urticae were studied using 32P-labeled extracts in various concentrations, presented to the mites within a para film sachet supported by a short open-end tube; this species fed readily in such a system. Higher percentages of females were attracted to extracts of ‘Citation,’ the total intake was higher, and the rate of ingestion was more rapid in this clone, which is relatively attractive to mites and susceptible to mite injury.
