Abstract

Abstract The reaction of pyrazine 1-oxide with phosphoryl chloride gave a 49% yield of 2-chloropyrazine and a small amount of 2-aminopyrazine. The precursor of aminopyrazine was elucidated to be a 1-(2-pyrazinyl)pyrazinium salt. The orientation of substitution in the formation of the salt was determined by reaction of deuterium labelled pyrazine N-oxides with phosphoryl chloride.
