Abstract
We have been undertaking the studies on experimental islet transplantation since 1978 and clinical islet transplantation with short-term cultured human fetal islet tissue in patients with insulin-dependent (type I) diabetes mellitus since 1981 (1–4). On entrustment of the Ministry of Health, we have sponsored several special courses from 1984 to 1986 to popularize islet transplantation in China. The National Cooperating Group for study of Islet Transplantation was established in 1985. There has been great progress in clinical islet transplantation in China in recent years (5–7). According to the data of the Islet Transplant Registry of the National cooperating Group, as of the end of 1991, there were 939 patients with type I diabetes altogether having received islet grafts in 59 hospitals all over China, 835 of them with integral data. This article will present the influences of pretreatment in vitro on the immunogenecity of human fetal islet and an analysis of the clinical data of 835 diabetics with islet grafts.
