Abstract

Abstract Twenty-one sets of monozygotic twin cows of mainly Jersey breed were used during the 1965–66 season in a split-twin trial comparing the lactational production of twin members prepared for milking by manual stimulus which was increased stepwise during lactation, with that of their twin mates given only a short wash before machine milking. Lactation length was significantly increased by the treatment (32 ± 9 days). The stimulated group produced on average 17% (355 ± 70 litres) more milk and 18% (20 ± 4 kg) more milkfat than their non-stimulated twin mates.
