Abstract

Abstract Vinylchloride-vinylacetate-maleic acid terpolymer ( vmt ) was blended with nitrocellulose in cyclohexanone in different weight fractions and concentrations. The compatibility of the blend was studied by visible spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the morphology by polarized microscopy. The participation of the acid group present in the vmt in bonding with metal was established by Fourier transform intra-red spectroscopy studies of vmt -coated aluminium (untreated and acetone-washed) panels, and taking pure vmt alone as the reference. The blend solution was applied as a surface coating for aluminium and mild steel surfaces (untreated and acetone-washed). Adhesion, heat seal joint strength, bending, heat resistance, salt water immersion tests and weathering tests were conducted.
