Abstract

In a previous paper (Velle, 1958 b) the in vivo conversion of oestradiol-17β to oestrone and oestradiol-17α in young calves was reported. The urinary metabolites of injected oestrone were also studied and the results are presented in this paper. Animals. Three normal, healthy calves were used in the experiments: A, a 14 days old female calf; B, a 12 days old bull calf; C, a 12 weeks old female calf. The age refers to the beginning of the experimental periods. Calves A and B were kept on a milk diet, while calf C also received hay and concentrates. Collection of urine was accomplished by the use of specially constructed stalls. Complete 24 hours collections were made during the control periods, i. e. 3 days before the injections, and subsequently until the urinary oestrogen levels had returned to the control values.
