Abstract

In Tenebrio both crowding and mating stimulate oöcyte growth. Virgin females produce fewer eggs than mated females. Lack of mating cannot be replaced by the stimulus of crowding. Rapid production of large numbers of eggs, as in mated females, is associated with a lack of accumulation of stainable material in the neurosecretory system and the corpora allata. In virgin females stainable material accumulates in the neurosecretory system and the corpora allata. The corpus allatum volume cannot be used as an absolute criterion on which to determine secretory activity.
