Abstract
AbstractA specific enzymatic method for homogentisic acid was used to study its distribution in guinea pigs. Thirty minutes after intraperitoneal administration, relatively high concentrations were found in skin and cartilage. This unusual distribution pattern agrees with the localization of ochronotic pigment in alcaptomria. Binding experiments demonstrated that homogentisic acid was bound by albumin, but not by homogenates of cartilage and skin. A scheme to explain the events leading to ochronosis is presented.
