Abstract

Observations on the distribution of Mortierella ramanniana (Moller) Linnem. var. ramanniana and M. ramanniana var. autotrophica Howell Evans show that they occupy different ecological niches in soils of an acid sandy nature. M. ramanniana var. autotrophica has the type of distribution considered characteristic of the species by McLennan & Ducker (1954) and Hepple (1958) , whereas M. ramanniana var. ramanniana has been found only in association with living roots and other plant material. Under experimental conditions both varieties were inoculated into steam-sterilized soil containing seedlings of Pinns sylvestris and their patterns of distribution, analysed after 8 weeks, were found to reflect those observed in the field.
