Abstract

1. 1. Ligated and unligated Fasciola absorb the non-metabolized sugar 3-O-methylglucose at equal rates. Uptake is a non-linear function of concentration but the sugar is not accumulated. 2. 2. Glucose absorption is a non-linear function of concentration and is inhibited by 3-0-methylglucose, mannose, glucosamine and galactose. Phlorizin was without effect. 3. 3. Fructose, mannose, glucosamine, and ribose absorption were non-linear functions while xylose uptake was a linear function of concentration. 4. 4. Interactions of the above sugars were examined. Sugar absorption was not affected by the absence of sodium nor by the presence of ouabain. 5. 5. Sugar transport in Fasciola is discussed in terms of numbers of mechanisms and compared with other parasitic animals.
