Studies on lymphocytes: VIII. Short in vivo mitotic time of basophilic lymphoid cells in the thoracic duct of calves after simulated or effective extracorporeal irradiation of circulating blood

Abstract

After cannulation of the thoracic duct of calves and after a single intravenous injection of 3H-thymidine, the mitotic time of lymphoid cells with a more basophilic cytoplasm was evaluated in vivo by removing lymph samples at 10 min intervals during 2 hr and by measuring time intervals between prophase and telophase index curves. After conversion of midprophase-midtelophase time to mitotic time, mitosis was found to last between 16 and 18.7 min. Mitotic time of lymphoid cells with a more basophilic cytoplasm was almost identical in the three calves studied and was not influenced by 48 hr of extracorporeal irradiation of the circulating blood.
