Abstract

Between 1982 and 1988, 53 patients underwent resection for cancer of the rectum. Eleven (20.8%) of the 53 patients subsequently developed local recurrence, including eight (30.8%) out of 26 after and sphincter saving resection (SSR) and three (13.0%) out of 23 after abdominoperineal resection (APR). Factors possibly related to local recurrence after SSR were serosa infiltration, depth and lymphatic invasion (ly). Recurrence was seen in 45.5% of patients with obvious serosa infiltration, and 40.0% of those with invasion into adjacent organs. As high as 50.0% of local recurrence rate was noted in patients with negative lymph node involvement after SSR, where the distance to the stumps was 4-9 cm in all cases which was considered sufficient. In histologicaly, tumors in all recurrences were differentiated adenocarcinoma. Three cases of local recurrence after APR had no certain pathological feature.Three cases could be re-operated on for local recurrence and only one of recurrence is alive.
