Abstract
Fig tree (Ficus carica L.) considered as characteristic species of the Mediterranean area is well cultivated in Albania. In this country, favorable zones for fig growing and fig production are Barati , Tirana and Vlora. Local fig varieties (23 in Tirana, 9 in Berati and 7 in Vlora) are described and evaluated on the basis of pomological and agronomic characteristics with the aim to improve conservation and use of this germplasm. Results show a large diversity within local cultivars related to tree and fruit characters. Cultivars from Berati region are suitable for commercial cultivation. Those from Vlora zone should be cultivated for tourism development. Local varieties from Tirana region should be cultivated for fresh fig production. Further efforts and other descriptors are needed for fig genetic resources description and evaluation.
