Abstract
ABSTRACT After autotomy of 1 to 4 appendages, Pagurus longicarpus regenerated and molted rapidly. There was no significant difference in regeneration rate or time to ecdysis in crabs with differing numbers of limbs removed. This is different from many brachyurans studied in which regeneration rate and ecdysis are accelerated by multiple autotomy. Emeritatalpoida exhibited a very weak autotomy reflex and very poor regenerative ability. The few crabs which developed limb buds did so after molting. These findings are discussed with reference to adaptive value of autotomy and regeneration, and likelihood of limb loss in nature.
