Abstract

Abstract This two year study was the first systematic investigation of rice pests in Hong Kong. Sampling of larvae was carried out on seedlings and stubble and of adults from light trap catches. Tryporyza incertulas is the principal rice pest in Hong Kong and South China. A detailed study of the oviposition behaviour was undertaken and the preferred oviposition site was found to be 2 to 5 cm from the apex of the two youngest leaves. 26% of egg masses were found to be parasitised. The dispersal of larvae in the seedling stage and their behaviour throughout the year are described. 1% of stubble stems contain over-wintering larvae. Cnapholocrocis medinalis was also found in large numbers and Psara licarsialis, Nymphula sp and Chilotraea polychrysa were common.
