Studies on lanthanide complexes with open chain multidentate ligands—IX. Synthesis, characterization and structure of the complexes of lanthanide nitrates with N,N′-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)tetraglycollic diamide

Abstract

Lanthanide nitrate complexes with N,N′-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)tetraglycollic diamide (L) have been prepared in non-aqueous medium. These new complexes with the general formula [Ln(L)(NO 3) 3] (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm) have been characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurements and IR spectra. An X-ray crystallographic structural determination of the praseodymium complex shows that the pentadentate organic ligand wraps around the lanthanide ion which is also bonded to three bidentate nitrate groups, achieving the uncommon undeca-coordination.
