Abstract

The world is presently confronted with the twin crisis of fossil fuel depletion and environmental degradation. The search for an alternative fuel, which promises a pleasant link with sustainable development, energy conservation, management, efficiency, and environmental safeguarding, has become highly noticeable in the present context. In this investigation, experiments were conducted on a 1-C, 4-S, air-cooled, stationary direct-injection diesel engine (Kirlosker TAF1) with maximum 1,500 rpm and maximum 4.4 kW capacity coupled to an electrical generator. The injection timing (17°, 18.5°, 20°, 21.5°, 23°, 24.5° Ca) and flow rate (80, 120, 150, 250, 600 g/hr) of hydrogen were varied with 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% EGR to find out the optimum condition for hydrogen enrichment to meet the best performance with lowest emission. It can be safely concluded that 120 g/hr hydrogen enrichment can be conveniently used at 20° CA BTDC and no major engine modifications are required for the same.
