Studies on fish scale formation and resorption—II. Effect of estradiol on calcium homeostasis and skeletal tissue resorption in the goldfish, Carassius auratus, and the killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus

Abstract

1. 1. Skeletal tissue resorption was examined by estradiol injection in 45Ca-prelabeled fish, Carassius auratus and Fundulus heteroclitus. 2. 2. A single injection of estradiol resulted in marked increases in plasma calcium levels. 3. 3. Scale resorption was shown by significant decreases in radioactivity of the prelabeled scale following estrogenization. 4. 4. No evidence was obtained in favor of Ca resorption from the vertebra, jaw and otolith.
