Abstract

Freshwater fish, Tilapia mossambica (Peters) were acclimated to low and high hydrogen ion concentrations and their liver carbohydrate metabolism was investigated. Differential patterns of metabolism were witnessed in the liver in response to acidic and basic media. Liver exhibited suppressed glycolysis and elevated glycogen content in acidic media, but in basic media the glycolysis was elevated. In general, the hepatic tissue was oriented towards lesser production of organic acids with increased carbohydrate reserves in acidic medium, but in alkaline medium there was increased organic acid production, as a possible adaptive mechanism of the fish, enabling it to counteract the imposed pH stress.
