Abstract

Study was performed on experimental Salmonellosis using rats. The following results were obtained : 1) Typhoid nodules in the liver which were produced by injection of 10-4mg of virulent strain of Salmonella enteritidis almost disappeared after 2 to 3 weeks without leaving any lesion in the liver. In some cases, hewever, lesion was observed in the kidney after 3 weeks.2) After injection of the fatal dose (10-2mg) of the virulent strain, typhoid nodules were formed in the liver, and all the cases died after 3 days.3) After injection of chrome-alum vaccine of the virulent strain, morphological findings were conspicuously different from those after injection of living organisms : namely, nodules in the liver were accompanied by deposition of fatty droplets and argyrophil fibers. These nodules were perfectly similar to those after injection of killed organisms to mouse, and nonspecific to experimental Salmonellosis.4) When rat, immunized with living vaccine of the virulent strain, were challenged with the fatal dose of the same strain (after disappearance of the lesion produced by the immunizing organisms), formation of the nodules were perfectly inhibited, and all the cases survived.5) When rest, immunized with the killed vaccine, were challenged with the fatal dose of the virulent strain, survival time was prolonged and formation of typhoid nodules was inhibited considerably, but the majority of the animals finally died accompanied with severe renal lesion.
