Studies on CMV Spreading Rate of Red and Green Aphid Populations

Abstract

The CMV spreading rate of red and green aphid,Myzus persicae,populations and the virus carrying ability of aphid were studied.The results showed that both red and green aphid populations could pick up or spread virus within 0.5 minutes,the spreading rate increased obviously from 0.5 to 5 minutes;after 5 minutes,the rate increased slowly.In low density(below 5 aphids per plant),the spreading rate increased obviously with the number of aphids;while the increase of spreading rate became slow when the number of aphids was more than 5 in a plant.The virus picking up time was about 25 minutes when aphids spread virus continuously;it was up to 40 minutes if aphids did not spread immediately after picking up the viruses.Therefore,the virus carrying ability of both red and green aphids was weaker,the measures of expelling aphids from where tobacco was grown should be taken for tobacco CMV control.
