Abstract

The effect of short-term ingestion of an oral contraceptive agent on aflatoxin B 1 hepatotoxicity in female rats was investigated. Oral administration of 100 /ig Ovral-28 for 16 consecutive days prior to ip administration of a single dose of aflatoxin B 1 diminished the hepatic necrosis observed in rats that received aflatoxin alone. Pretreatment with Ovral-28 also prevented completely the decrease in the level of hepatic reduced glutathione and partially reversed the decrease in the activity of the hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme system caused by aflatoxin B 1.
