Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility measurements from 100° to 1000°K have been made on UP and on the solid solutions UP 0·25S 0·75, UP 0·5S 0·5 and UP 0·75S 0·25. Further measurements on compositions closer to the UP end of the binary confirm and extend earlier results. Antiferromagnetic ordering is observed for solid solutions containing ⩽ 10 per cent and ferromagnetic ordering for ⩾ 25 per cent US. Electrical resistivity and X-ray lattice parameter measurements as a function of temperature are reported for the 3 principal compositions. The resistivities show a change of slope at the Curie Points. The structural behaviour is more complex; UP 0·25S 0·75, like US, undergoes a rhombohedral distortion below the Curie Point but reverts to cubic below 45°K. Neither UP 0·5S 0·5 nor UP 0·75S 0·25 shows this behaviour, but the latter composition undergoes a small change in lattice parameter near 17°K.
