Abstract

Abstract Cu, Zn, Mn, Cd, Se were studied i n blood, liver, urine, hair and nails in Indian childhood cirrhosis patients and control children by atomic absorption spectrophotometer with flame, carbon rod atomization and hydride generation. The mean copper level in cirrhosis patients and controls was : liver tissue 289.0 ± 79.2 and 62.6 ± 22.3 ug/g wet wt; plasma 1.21 ± 0.17 and 0.97 ± 0.11 ug/ml; urine 419.9 ± 187.1 and 28.2 ± 6.7 ug/24h; hair 42.2 ± 18.1 and 27.2 ± 11.3 ug/g; nails 31.3 ± 8.6 and 22.2 ± 10.1 ug/g, respectively . The mean zinc level in cirrhosis patients and controls was : liver 51.39 ± 7.99 and 84.13 ± 5.36 ug/g wet wt; 26.57 and 155.33 ± 5.04 ug/dl, respectively . The mean Mn, Cd and Se levels in liver, plasma, urine, hair and nails in cirrhosis patients and control children were statistically insignificant.
