Abstract

A vertical converter has been equipped with a single vertical lance to deliver an oxygen blast. One important consequence of this method of delivery is that molten metal is sprayed in the opposite direction, which accelerates wear of the lance. In principle, this problem is resolved by resorting to spatially oriented delivery of the blast: several specially designed radial-axial lances direct the blast into the converter. Having cooling channels with a low hydraulic resistance, these lances create the conditions necessary for the use of cooling systems under negative pressure. The horizontal peripheral positioning of the lances also makes it possible to lower the height of structures inside the shop. A lance of the proposed design was tested in the blowing of 5 tons of copper-nickel matte.
