Abstract

Angular distributions and excitation functions for the first four groups of alpha particles from the reaction N 14(d, α)C 12 have been studied. The angular distribution of the α 0 group has been measured at twelve deuteron energies between 1.1 and 2.5 MeV. A marked forward peaking is observed in the angular distribution of the α 0 group at E d = 1.1 MeV and above. The α 1 group shows a forward peak in the angular distribution at deuteron energies 1.5 MeV and higher. The angular distribution of the α 2 group is virtually isotropic up to the deuteron energy of 2.2 MeV and that of the group α 3 varies strongly with energy. Excitation curves for the groups α 0, α 1, α 2 and α 3 measured at the angle of 90° show a smooth energy dependence. Slight irregularities have been observed in the excitation function of the group α 0 at E d = 1.65, 1.85 and 2.2 MeV measured at the angle of 20°. The angular distribution of the α 0 group has been found to be in satisfactory agreement with the predictions of the two-particle pick-up theory.
