Abstract

SUMMARY A more modern pig-breeding industry has become established in Jamaica and data on piglet production there appears characteristic of modern pig industries in several countries in the temperate regions. A special inquiry into nursing piglet survival was conducted. A percentage of 79-2 of live-born piglets survived beyond one month of age in 131 litters recorded. It was observed that the number of piglet survivals increased with the number of live-born in the litter. The margin of gain, however, was disproportionate, becoming smaller with large litters. The actual numbers of piglets surviving in the litters of mature sows were not significantly less than in the litters from gilts; indeed there was a slight increase in litter numbers surviving (though not in the percentage surviving) with mature sows.
