On the interpretation of the CN/C2 and CO/C2 ratios in cool carbon stars. Scalo, J. M. Abstract The variation of the CN and C2 abundances with temperature, pressure, and composition in the regions of line formation in cool carbon-star atmospheres is examined in detail for two possible mixing mechanisms: deep envelope mixing and plume mixing. The calculations differ from those of Tsuji and Morris and Wyller because of the inclusion of the CS molecule and the use of a different dissociation energy for CN. It is shown from elementary considerations that the N/C ratio in cool carbon stars cannot be unambiguously deduced from the CN/C2 ratio unless 0/H and C/O are specified simultaneously. A method for distinguishing between the two mixing mechanisms observationally on the basis of the CN/C2 and CO/C2 ratios is illustrated.
