Abstract

In this study, an attempt is made to investigate the course of eczema and of asthma in children of preschool age; the emphasis is upon an understanding of the contemporary intrafamilial dynamics that may bear upon these illnesses. We have undertaken to investigate the circumstances under which remission or exacerbations of the illnesses occur. To a limited extent, we have had opportunity to observe the onset of asthma in eczematous children, hitherto free of symptoms of asthma, and we present some speculations regarding this transition. During the course of the study, we were interested in the possible distinctions, with respect to parent-child relationships, that might obtain in the life situation of the child who develops asthma without presenting earlier symptoms of eczema, as contrasted with the child in whom asthma is preceded by eczema.
