Abstract

Summary The results of these kinetic examinations, as the example of MgF2 shows, lead to the conclusion that the mechanism of the ejection of atoms and ions of the anion lattice on electron irradiation occurs over several stages. The production of colour centres, the diffusion of particles to the surface, the ejection of the particles from the surface as well as the emission of Auger electrons. The reaction of the electrons with the anion lattice can then be summarized as: e− + X− → θX0± + e− primary lattice colour ejected Auger electron anion center atom electron or ion The metastable state of the accumulated colour centers in the lattice can be relaxed either through reaction with surrounding gases or under certain conditions through a spontaneous reduction process in the lattice itself.
