Abstract

Of all the psychoanalytic concepts, none have won such widespread acceptance as the mechanisms of defense. At the present time, a case study without an analysis of the patient’s defenses is almost inconceivable. It is a rare textbook in introductory psychology, principles of psychiatry, or casework which omits references to defenses. The hero of many a current novel is a pawn of the forces described in The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense,8 and words like repression, projection, and denial have become part of the intelligent layman’s vocabulary.
