Abstract

AbstractOn three-component, short-period, digital array recordings, S to P converted phases from three major crustal discontinuities beneath Efate Island are identified between the primary P and S arrivals. The time differences between the main S arrival and these converted phases (Sp1, Sp2, and Sp3) provide constraints on the crustal structure beneath Efate Island. A crustal model with three layers over a half-space is determined, which is consistent with the results of a published refraction experiment in the southern Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides) island arc.
