Abstract

1. 1. The behavior of the D 37 against cell concentration in E. coli x-irradiated is the same as that observed in some viruses by other authors. 2. 2. Partial protection against indirect radiation effects is afforded by cysteine and total protection by 2% broth. 3. 3. A possible explanation of unchanged D 37 at extremely dilute concentrations of cell suspensions has been suggested, based on the assumption that there exist a limiting factor of the indirect effect, represented by the distance between the single individual elements at a given cell concentration. To test this hypothesis the relationship between critical concentration and object size (for those microorganisms whose D 37-rmconcentration curves are given in the literature) has been studied.
