Abstract

IN A PREVIOUS paper (Singh, 1956), the writer described five new species of Trachelomonas and amplified the description of a sixth. The present contribution presents an account of the cell structure and the reproduction of the organisms which serve as the basis for their taxonomic disposition. There has been a paucity of morphological and cytological study of Trachelomonas (Pringsheim, 1952). Our knowledge of the genus in these respects is based mainly on the work of Klebs (1883), Wilson (1929) and Pringsheim (1952). Relevant portions of their contributions will be correlated with the author's observations in the concluding discussion in order to avoid repetition. The methods of cultivation and study have been presented in the previous paper (Singh, 1956). In addition Zettnow's method (Smith and Martin, 1948) of demonstrating flagellar structure was employed. The Hotchkiss test (Glick, 1949) and Prussian blue test (Glick, 1949) were performed in attempts to determine the chemical nature of the photosynthate (paramylon) and of the lorica.
