Abstract

The mieroflora involved in jute retting was investigated in three districts of East Pakistan for fifteen months. Three strains ofBacillus macerans, four strains ofB. polymyxa, five strains ofB. subtilis, three strains ofB. cereus, one strain ofB. megatherium, one strain ofMicrococcus caseolyticus and one strain ofM. luteus were isolated and their action on jute stems studied. All the strains mentioned retted jute in five to twelve days. The mode of retting is described.
