Abstract

Our understanding of the ancient Thamudic inscriptions recorded in North Arabia a century ago by Charles Huber and Julius Euting is still far from complete in spite of the valiant attempts made by H. Grimme, E. Littmann, G. Ryckmans, A. van den Branden and A. Jamme to interpret them. The present paper restricts itself to a group of 26 texts characterized by their employment of the verb 'tm, a group that has already been subjected to close examination by Jamme in JAOS 88 (1968), 290-94. It demonstrates, I believe, that Jamme's interpretation of them is completely misleading. They have nothing to do with the sex lives of their authors, as Jamme maintains, but are prayers to the gods for restoration to health.
