Abstract

There is little information about ancient gypsum-based plasters and no products in the market especially designed for its preservation. To fill this lacuna, a set of 44 samples of plastered elements used in the Portuguese architecture belonging to a time period of 2 centuries was studied.XRD and TG-DTA analysis revealed 3 compositional patterns with a direct relation to the type of application: smooth surface thin-layer plasters, moulded on site and pre-moulded elements.SEM-EDS observations showed that the microstructure is related to the mineralogical composition and to the final performance of the materials. This paper intends to contribute to the preservation and sustainable repair of the Portuguese ancient gypsum and gypsum-lime plaster coatings through the knowledge of the materials used in the original compositions.
