Abstract

The UK is going through its worst nurse shortage crisis for some time. With nurse recruiters too preoccupied with attracting overseas nurses, there has been too little emphasis and focus on the need for developing home-grown talent. Autumn is traditionally the time of year when there are large intakes of nursing students on preregistration programmes. We should be doing whatever possible to make our profession welcoming and attractive to new learners. Unfortunately, there is often too much negativity and lack of respect for students when they enter clinical placements.
