Abstract

Students' interests were assessed in a wide variety of specific topics in mathematics rather than on a global conception of mathematics. Data were obtained on nationally representative groups of students in Grades 1-8. A total of 72 mathematics topics was covered, with various subgroups of students responding to subgroups of the topics. There was wide variation in students' liking for specific items and noteworthy variation in changes across grades, with some items showing an increase in popularity and others showing a very large decrease.
