Abstract

Students’ growth-focused motivation, which encompasses constructs such as their growth mindset and growth goals, is a significant area of current research in educational psychology. Researchers have found that these types of growth constructs tend to be positively associated with a wide range of student outcomes, including academic well-being and positive functioning at school. Also, emerging research has found that growth constructs are underpinned by students’ underlying growth orientation, which represents their broader approach to academic growth. Researchers have found that students’ growth orientation is also highly relevant to their academic outcomes, such as their engagement and achievement. This chapter discusses these components (i.e., growth constructs and growth orientation) of students’ growth-focused motivation and their relevance and utility for students’ positive educational development. The authors present directions for future Positive Psychology research in growth-focused motivation.
